Conservatives call on Boris to deliver referendum result
'BRITAIN has a new Prime Minister after Boris Johnson won the Conservative Party poll by 66.4 per cent of Conservative members’ votes to rival Jeremy Hunt’s 33.6 per cent.
The old-Etonian has vowed to take Britain out of the European Union by the end of October, a task welcomed by Grassroots Conservatives.
A spokesman for the group said: “The overriding concern for the vast majority of grassroots Conservative Party members in the election of the new leader was to have a person who was fully committed as a ‘believer’ in securing what the country, in a referendum authorised by Parliament, decided.
“The person who embodied that commitment from the out- set is now our Prime Minister.
“Much remains to be done.”
They called on all, ‘especially all Conservative MPs’, to honour the democratic decision to leave the EU taken following the decision by Parliament to hold a referendum on the issue.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: “The people of our country should decide who becomes the Prime Minister in a general election.”
However, Green Party MP, Caroline Lucas said: “The stakes could not be higher. With the election of Boris Johnson we now have a Prime Minister committed to forcing a destructive Brexit on us all – and one who is also perfectly happy to see us crash out with a disastrous No Deal.
“Johnson will claim today that his election by the 0.25 per cent of the population who are Conservative Party members gives him a mandate to do what he likes on Brexit.”
For the Lib Dems Norman Lamb tweeted: “Dismal prospect having Boris Johnson as our Prime Minister. Demeans our country.”
But Michel Barnier tweeted:
“We look forward to working constructively w/ PM @BorisJohnson when he takes office, to facilitate the ratification of the Withdrawal Agreement and achieve an orderly #Brexit. We are ready also to rework the agreed Declaration on a new partnership in line with #EUCO guidelines.”
