Party Faithful write to Prime Minister ‘not to betray our democracy’

24 Sep 2018

Over 90 Conservative activists wrote to the Prime Minister at the weekend as follows. It was reported on Pages 1 and 4  in the Sunday Telegraph here

The Rt Hon Theresa May P.C., M.P.

Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury
10 Downing Street
London SW1A 2AA

September 21 2018

Dear Prime Minister,

You will be aware the Chequers White Paper has been a hugely controversial issue which has divided the Conservative Party more than any other.

Within the voluntary party many believe that the Chequers proposal shackles Britain to EU rules and laws and forces our country into indentured servitude to the EU.

There is anger at the singular failure to explain how the Chequers plan delivers “Brexit means Brexit” and huge anger at its betrayal of our democracy.

The Conservative Party has a proud history with significant electoral success – a huge part of which is the hard work of the voluntary Party. In order for this to continue, Brexit must be delivered in its entirety – because anything less will betray the trust put into the Party by the British public at the last general election.

We urge you to confirm that you will attend the meeting of the National Conservative Convention at the Party conference in Birmingham, to listen to the concerns of Party members over the Chequers White Paper and to allow you to personally respond.

Yours sincerely,

Ed Costelloe (Chairman Grassroots Conservatives, former Chairman, Somerset and Frome Conservative Association) and 90 others
