News from Grassroots conservatives

This letter has been received by Grassroots Conservatives:
I was delighted to hear your comments on the Today programme of 24th July(http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08ylr7p), in which you expressed traditional “conservative” thought in the true sense of the word. I agreed with everything you said, and was very impressed with your careful navigation though the minefield of issues associated with gender dysphoria and equalities. I was particularly glad that you made the comparison with anorexia nervosa, which is another kind of “body dysmorphia”. In anorexia the harm caused by the mistaken belief is physically life-threatening, whereas the harm caused by GD is mentally life-threatening because a social mistake warps or curtails the sufferer’s emotional development and attachments. GD is a regression to a state of emotional immaturity.
I am the ex-wife of a man who revealed to me his GD at the age of 70 after 14 years of total secrecy in an increasingly abusive marriage. He left us 10 years ago. I was fortunate to talk about him with an NHS consultant psychiatrist and then Medical Director for Mental Health Services, who said that psychiatry was “in the stone age” compared to physical medicine. She explained that there is no understanding about the cause of GD and psychiatrists have no methods of psychological treatment. Since the 1960s hormones and surgery have become gradually accepted for the most severe cases, for want of better alternatives and at the pressing behest of GD sufferers themselves.
I would be delighted to answer any questions which you may have.
Please continue your good work. It is so refreshing to hear some common sense about this subject! Thank you very, very much.
