MPs last night urged the Prime Minister to go much further and consider joining American air strikes.
David Burrowes, parliamentary chairman of the Conservative Christian Fellowship, said: ‘We should be joining with the US to provide military support to prevent genocide.
‘The Government has spoken up well for religious freedom and now needs to match those words with action.’
Andrew Rosindell, another Tory backbencher, said: ‘Britain cannot stand by and watch brutal terror being carried out against Christians in Iraq.’
There were calls for a return of Parliament from its summer break to debate possible British military action.
Tory MP Conor Burns said: ‘These are our brothers who are being slaughtered, beheaded, raped and buried alive at the hands of Islamo-fascists who do not seek to take territory but are waging a cultural war. They despise our values, our liberalism and our Christianity. Whilst I welcome the aid, I don’t think it is a good enough response.
‘We in part created this mess, Parliament should come back to discuss what Britain can do.’
